![]() ![]() How to Start Your Own Podcast. The podcast craze of the past several years shows no signs of slowing down, and while every armchair broadcaster with a voice recorder app is eager to get in the game, creating a professional- sounding podcast isn’t as simple as it might seem. Later, it was used to make abbreviations in medieval Latin documents. When an n or m followed a vowel, it was often omitted, and a tilde (i.e., a small n. Here’s how to create, record, and publish your own basic podcast—and get people to listen.*This story originally ran in June 2. August 2. 01. 7 with additional reporting from Patrick Austin.*Before You Start, Be Ready to Commit. Before you rush into things, it’s important to keep in mind that podcasts take a lot of effort to get going. They’re not just recordings of people talking (not the good ones, anyway). ![]() Pat Flynn, host of the Smart Passive Income podcast, recommends you treat podcasting the same way you would any other big project: Podcasting is extremely fun and exciting, but there is one thing you must do before you start podcasting: Commit. You must internally commit to podcasting, as you must do with anything that is potentially beneficial but takes some time and effort to do. It’s easy to assume that podcasts are easy to produce because they’re audio only, but don’t be fooled. They can take up a lot of time to put together, especially at first. Also, podcasts do best when they’re released consistently. If you’re interested in developing any kind of listener base, you have to be ready to release episodes on a regular basis. All in all, podcasting can be fun work, but it’s still work and should be treated as such. You also shouldn’t expect to get rich from podcasting either. It’s certainly possible to generate income from podcasting, but that usually requires advertisements and sponsorships—both of which you’ll get after you’ve built up a listenership big enough to make it worthwhile to advertisers. If you’re not interested in starting a podcast for the fun of it or to have your voice heard, you might not get much out of it unless you already have an audience. What You’ll Need. You can’t start a podcast without equipment, and good equipment will go a long way. Here’s what you’ll need: Microphone(s): Any microphone will work for recording your podcast, but listeners can usually tell the difference between low and high quality microphones. If you’re not sure what to look for, our list of the five best desktop microphones is a great place to start (I use four analog Audio- Technica AT2. As you shop around, you’ll also need to decide whether you want to use a USB or analog (XLR) microphone. USB mics convert analog sound into digital so you can plug a USB mic directly into any computer and start recording without much hassle, but you could potentially get lower audio quality compared to analog. Considering you don’t need any extra tools or devices to record with a USB mic, they can be a little cheaper in the long run. Analog microphones use XLR connectors, which means you need another device to get your audio onto your computer, but you can get higher audio quality and can use them with other sound equipment (if you had a PA system or wanted to play live music, for example). Of course, if you have a gaming headset or other basic microphone around, you can easily use that too. Portable XLR Recorder (optional): If you plan on using analog microphones for your podcast, you’ll need something that captures your analog audio and converts it to digital. Portable XLR recorders can capture multiple microphone channels and allow you to do basic sound level adjusting and muting on the fly. Audio files automatically get organized and stored on a memory card that you can insert into a card reader or slot in your computer. These are amazing tools, but they can be expensive. You can find them for anywhere between $1. I use a $4. 00 Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with four available analog channels). Audio Interface (optional): If you want to record directly to your computer with your analog microphones, you’ll need an audio interface. These devices allow you to plug in one or more analog microphones and will convert the analog audio to digital. Most audio interfaces will connect to your computer via USB or Firewire. Audio interfaces can cost as little as $3. You can see why a USB microphone is a cheaper option.)A Computer: Any Windows computer or Mac should work fine to record, edit, and upload your podcast. Thankfully, editing audio doesn’t take a ton of computing power. Additionally, depending on how you choose to record—directly to the computer or onto a dedicated recording device—your computer will also need the right ports. USB microphones, for example, will obviously need an open USB port. If you’re using analog microphones with a portable XLR recorder or audio interface device, you’ll need either a 3. USB port, or in some cases, a Firewire port. So before you spend any money on equipment, make sure you have a computer that can support it. Audio Editing Software: For the actual recording and editing, you’ll need a Digital Audio Workstation (or DAW), there are a lot of good options out there, but the licenses for some of them can cost a pretty penny, though. Licenses for professional level DAWs like Reason or Pro Tools can cost anywhere between $3. Apps like Hindenburg offer simpler audio editing software for under $1. Reaper is a fully loaded audio production app for $6. Adobe’s audio editing software Audition CC is available with a $1. Because of that, most people will recommend free open source programs like Audacity when you’re just getting started, and that’s what we’ll use an example throughout this how- to guide. Pop Filters (optional): The clearer your audio can sound, the better. Pop filters, while not required, are fairly cheap and can keep your plosives from making a nasty sound on your recording. If you don’t want to buy any, though, you can make some of your own. You might be thinking that all this equipment is pretty expensive, and you’re not wrong. However keep in mind that decent audio equipment will last forever if you take care of it. It may be expensive to get started, but after the initial purchase, you’re set. Step One: Narrow Your Topic and Find Your Niche. Just like blogs, there are a ton of podcasts out there. That means that you can probably find a podcast about everything under the sun already. Don’t get discouraged! While just about every broad topic is already covered, you just have to find your spin on things to make an old idea something new. Dear Lifehacker, As a side project/experiment, I’ve started my own blog. The problem is, now that I …Read more For example, if you wanted to make a podcast about music, ask yourself if there’s an audience out there for what you want to talk about. Maybe you narrow your idea down from music in general to bluegrass specifically. Now your coverage is specific: the music, people, and culture of bluegrass. Once you have your topic narrowed down, it helps to add a spin to it. Maybe you talk about bluegrass music and culture while sipping moonshine with your co- hosts. It’s kind of true that everything has been done before, but it hasn’t all been done the way you would do it. So find an angle that’s personally interesting and you’ll be better off. Step Two: Download, Install, and Set Up Audacity. As mentioned earlier, Audacity is a great DAW for podcasting beginners. It’s open source, free to use as long as you like, and is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Before you can jump into recording, however, there are a few tricks to getting it all set up properly: Download Audacity 2. Connect your microphone and open Audacity. See if your microphone is being recognized by Audacity by checking the drop- down menu next to the small microphone icon. If you see your mic, go ahead and select it. In the top- left corner, you should see the pause, play, stop, skip back, skip forward, and record buttons. Click the record button and talk into your mic to make sure it’s working properly. Stop recording and playback what you just recorded to make sure everything sounds okay. You’ll want to export your audio in the MP3 format later on. In order to do that, you’ll need to download and install the Lame MP3 encoder for either Windows or Mac. Once that’s installed, close and reopen Audacity. Record yourself talking for a few seconds like before, then go to File, then Export Audio, and select MP3 Files in the ‘Save as type’ dropdown menu. Name your file something simple like “test. Find the MP3 file on your desktop and try playing it in your MP3 player of choice, just to make sure everything is working properly. 专业的BT/Emule资源发布系统. 3DMGAME BT资源站 最全的游戏资源站. Alaska Birth Doula. Pros. So many I couldn't hope to list them all here. To sum it up it's a DAW that you can use like an instrument. ![]() Cons. Not 6. 4- bit. Not for people who don't want to try something new. Summary. If you're looking for a program that requires little work to get a generic sound out of it go for FL- Studio. If you're looking for a real program that requires you to grow some balls to use it, that you can take with you from the composition stage to the stage you perform on, that's reliable cross platform from a company that's main focus is making music software for musicians (rather than FL asking you to rat out any site that has illegal copies of it, and your friends that have copies of it, includes spyware that tracks you and spends a lot of money on a legal team that "gets results" - from FL's webpage) use Ableton Live. Also Ableton has many midi controllers specifically designed for it. This is the future of music production, don't take my word for it ask Justice or Daft Punk among many others. 29.09.2004 Alcatech BPM Studio Professional v4.9.1 01.11.2005 Algorithmix Plugins Bundle DX v1.3 Repack 23.10.2005 Algorithmix Plugins Bundle DX v1.3. I have yet to actually see a project to fruition. I ALWAYS end up going back to hardware recording after using this program. I must be stupid, but I HATE, HATE, HATE that I cannot conquer this program. Any gurus out there who might want to camp out at my house when I'm ready to use it? Anyone? Anyone? Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(0) (1) Pros. There are so many options. This piece of software is the most complete package I've ever got my hands on. Remixing and creating music on the go has never been so easy. Cons. A whole lot of options requires a whole lot of learning : ) It doesn't work with 2 sound cards!!!! If you're a DJ and you want to mix with Ableton, prepare yourself for a whole lot of head scratching and frustration. Why, you ask? Summary. Because just setting op the cue is a nightmare. Like I said, Ableton doesn't support working with 2 soundcards simultaneously. If you want to listen to your cue with a headphone, your soundcard needs at least 2 stereo out. Even though most soundcard have thjis feature nowadays, setting it up in your preferences is guaranteed to give you a headache. But... If you succeed in doing this, Ableton is magic! Unlimited numbers of effects can be be applied on your tracks. Creating your own loops is easy. Warping, time- stretching, pitching and using the equalizer feel so fluid and intuitive. Mixing 6 tracks at the same time while playing a tune with your midi keyboard linked with some vst's just works. Simple as that. As far as producing music goes, I recon some people might prefer other software for the creation of the samples itself, but when it comes arranging them nothing beats ableton. I would advise everyone to give it a go. It may be bit too much for some people, but if you have a good basic understanding about loop based music, you'll get the hang of this in no time. Reply to this review. Read reply (1)Was this review helpful?(1) (0) Reply by 3. ERIC on August 2. Pros. The clips, the warping, the easy object- oriented interface.. How can I say enough about this software? Cons. I don't like that I can't change time signatures within my song file (!!!) Also plugins are a little crappy but what do you expect from free preloaded effects? Summary. I've used a few different tools over the years. Digital Performer, Cakewalk, Logic, Protools. By far, this one is the friendliest, if not the most powerful. If you are a tekkie or gear head, go with one of the more feature- heavy DAW's. If you're a songwriter, though, and you want something that is easy to use and sounds great, Live is for you. As other reviewers have posted, it does eat up RAM, so make sure you've dedicated enough resources. Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(1) (0) Pros. Seems to have a lot of options for music creation. Cons. Freezes after about a minute. No sound and I could not fix with new/different sound drivers. Eats up CPU. FLstudio/Reason both work fine on my computer. I'm using an AMD athlon XP 1. Ram, so if you have anything less powerful than that, you'll probably have problems. Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(1) (1) Pros. More than a tool to record sound, Live is an application for live performances, which provides to total functionality to control in real time the parameters that other software. Definitively, Live revolutionized the form to edit, to compose and to execute music in addition to being very intuitive. Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(1) (0) Pros. I love how simple and fast it generally is to make music. Plus, its excellent quality sound. I've tried out Reason demos and Cakewalk, but this one is the best. I like how I can drag and drop clips from my comp directly to my destinated track. Lots of MIDI to explore and MIDI/Audio effects. Also, its nice being able to choose which tracks I want to have record on same as playback. This means I can record and hear what Im playing at the same time, or do whatever I want (this is not the same in Cakewalk). Overall, its a great software. Cons. Uses good amount of resources and is expensive $4. I believe. But you should get it if you want to do computer recording. If youre playing guitar or whatever into it, its very laggy unless you get ASIO driver, which eliminates all the crap. Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(2) (0) Pros. You can use it as a Multitrack recorder, Sequencer, Sound generator, Mixer, Remixer(makes it easy), and Looper, besides the obvious "live" capabilities. Amazing sounds/effects/soft syths. Gobs of parameters, a thousand ways to mutilate/variate your music. A solid beast for the intermediate DJ/Remix artist. Once you get past the hard- to- understand user interface(who knows, maybe it's because it's a German product), you'll be amazed at how good you sound. Cons. The user interface is NOT intuitive. Simple recording of an instrument sound is complicated(because there are so many ways to do this). Simple exporting of loops is not a simple task either. Some WAV files won't import unless they have been "Analyzed" first. MP3 files can be imported, but not created/rendered from Ableton. In other words, you can't hit a button and turn an Ableton Live Set/Song/Clip into an MP3. WAV and AIFF only. This is a feature on most audio software programs under $9. ACID Home Studio comes to mind). Maybe it's possible to do this, but good luck figuring it out. Overall, the software is detailed and useful for intermediate to advanced level audiophiles, but fails the "experienced amateur" and anyone below that ability level because there are just too many ways to do everything. For $4. 99, you're probably better off getting Reason or Soundforge, unless you work in a professional studio. But you probably aren't looking at Ableton Live if you're a professional, because there are better "professional" grade products(albeit more expensive) out there. Reply to this review. I stole then adapted this idea from this awesome silhouette my son made for me at preschool. Wanting to make it a little different I decided to add some letter recognition into it and make a canvas with the word Dad on it instead. What’s great is that it works for all ages, babies can finger paint, older children can add more than just “Dad” . Gather your materials. You will need a canvas, some vinyl letters, paint brush ( if you want little guys to cover a lot give them a big brush), paint and if you want a frame to display it. Start by placing the vinyl letters on the blank canvas. I placed the colors my son chose in a ice cube tray to make it easy for him to paint. Next start painting! Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC megastar Conor Mc. Gregor are gonna “fight” tomorrow. Since it’s a boxing match, Mayweather will almost certainly beat Mc. Gregor bloody and then use Mc. Gregor’s hair to mop up his own bodily fluids. To alleviate that inevitable disappointment and test the two fighters’ true skills, I put on a series of better fights. In a pro wrestling video game. This article originally ran on 7/1. It’s been bumped up and lightly edited in anticipation of the disappointing shitsho— I mean, fight tomorrow. Since this whole Mayweather vs Mc. Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC megastar Conor McGregor are gonna “fight” tomorrow. Since it’s a boxing match, Mayweather will almost certainly beat. You can’t get Overwatch on the Switch, but if you could, I bet it’d be full of cameos like this. Addicting Games is the largest source of the best free online games including funny games, flash games, arcade games, dress-up games, internet games, shooting games. Gregor thing is just an excuse for an absurdly lucrative media circus—much of which went down a month ago during a four- day multinational promo tour in which Mayweather and Mc. Gregor yelled at each other, threw money around, and Mc. Gregor delivered some extremely questionable opinions about race—I decided to go as big as possible with my fights. I wanted to see who’d fare better against the best fighters ever conceived. Only one video game could offer me the sort of roster I needed: Fire Pro Wrestling World, which came out on Steam in July and already had over 3,0. I put this together. I went through all of them to select Mayweather and Mc. Gregor’s opponents. I decided both would run the same gauntlet of larger- than- life circus fights. Whoever fared better—even if they lost every fight—would be declared the winner. I also had to choose between multiple Mayweathers and Mc. Gregors, because of course multiple people have taken cracks at making two of the most well- known fighters on Earth. In order to do this with as much scientific rigor as possible, I matched each version of Mayweather and Mc. Gregor against each other in hopes that one pairing would produce the sort of fight most people are expecting from the two. Thanks to Fire Pro Wrestling’s complex AI logic system, which allows people to assign percentage chances that fighters will use specific moves in all sorts of different scenarios, I came away with a Mayweather and Mc. Gregor who fought remarkably similarly to their real- life counterparts. Mayweather punched, clinched, covered, evaded, and frustrated. Mc. Gregor flew forward with knees and kicks, seemingly possessed by a primal hunger to land his big left hand—but he also looked like a pale ghost of himself after a couple hard rounds. Perfect. That’s when I knew I had my very good wrestle boy robots based on not very good punch men. So there’s my methodology. Now onto the fights. First Opponent: Goku. Goku from Dragon Ball Z is probably the most powerful fighter in all of anime, though forum debates on that subject rage to this day and will undoubtedly persist after we’re all dead. Obviously, though, Mayweather and Mc. Gregor had to duke it out with the man who once yelled so loud that he grew several additional six packs. Mayweather vs Goku. Summary: Goku beats down Mayweather but eventually wears himself out. Mayweather taunts every chance he gets while jabbing the crap out of Goku. Mayweather obsessively uppercuts Goku in the back and butt, only to succumb to exhaustion himself. Goku then hoists Mayweather into the air and slams him, leading to a pin. Result: Goku wins by “Spirit Bomb” (a power bomb into a pin) after 1. Mc. Gregor vs Goku. Summary: Mc. Gregor overwhelms Goku early and nearly wins with ground ‘n’ pound, but he ends up exhausted (of course) and barely escapes from a power bomb pin. Mc. Gregor misses a spin kick, as is his way, and looks to be so tired that he can barely stand. Goku starts wailing on him. Then, out of nowhere, Mc. Gregor uncorks a left hand the size of his own ego and Goku eats dirt. Result: Mc. Gregor wins by come- from- behind “holy shit” KO after nine minutes and 3. Overall winner: Mc. Gregor. Mc. Gregor won’t shut up about what would happen if he was duking it out with Mayweather in an MMA fight instead of a boxing match, so I figured we ought to contest this on neutral territory: a street fight. The first rule of street fighting is that there are no rules—which is why fireballs made of spirit energy are allowed—so I decided to toss Mayweather and Mc. Gregor in with multiple characters from Street Fighter. At the same time. Mayweather vs Balrog, Mika, Guile, and Ryu. Summary: Balrog is a goddamn giant, but Mayweather holds his own and forces Balrog to tag in Guile. Mayweather beats down Guile and Ryu at the same time, but then they tag in Mika, who absolutely styles on Floyd with every pro wrestling move in the book. Balrog returns and finishes the job by casually standing on Mayweather—who is basically dead. Result: Street Fighter characters win by pin after nine minutes and 5. Mc. Gregor vs Balrog, Mika, Guile, and Ryu. Summary: Mc. Gregor comes out aggressive and backs up Balrog and Ryu with a series of withering kicks and knees. Guile gives him some trouble, but then Guile tags in Mika, and Mc. Gregor goes into Irish berserker mode against both of them. Mc. Gregor actually lands a spin kick, something that has never happened in real life, but finds himself exhausted afterward. Mika and Ryu knock him out of the ring and grab a steel chair. Unbelievably, Mc. Gregor fends off their dual- pronged strike and even manages to nearly submit Guile. Unfortunately for him, Balrog—who is somehow bigger than the largest man on earth, Nate Diaz—lumbers back into the ring and boxes Mc. Gregor into a pulp. He then pins him the same way he submitted Mayweather, casually smirking all the while. Result: Street Fighter characters win by pin after 1. Overall winner: Mc. Gregor. Didn’t Mayweather vs Mc. Gregor basically already happen in 2. Rocky Balboa, which was bad? Even then, though, Rocky—the scruffy, odds- defying god of underdogs—is impossible to dislike, which makes him a perfect foil for Mayweather and Mc. Gregor. Also, he’s the best- known fictional boxer in existence, so I didn’t really have a choice here. Mayweather vs Rocky Balboa. Summary: Rocky bloodies Mayweather with a single punch, which doesn’t bode well for Mayweather’s chances. Mayweather fights hard, clinching and moving like his training regimen mostly consisted of watching the ballroom scene from Beauty And The Beast repeatedly, but he’s a bloody mess. Eventually, Rocky tires, and Mayweather turns the tide. He starts taunting and landing hard combos. But then the tide turns again, and Rocky begins body slamming Mayweather from the top ropes. Then the tide turns a third time, and Mayweather lays into Rocky, who is so exhausted that light gusts are bowling him over. It’s wild! By this point, however, nearly 2. I realize I should set a time limit for these things, because these guys seem incapable of finishing each other. Result: Draw after 2. Mc. Gregor vs Rocky Balboa. Summary: Despite his aggression, Mc. Gregor gets pieced up on the feet early. He starts using takedowns and clinches to even the odds and ends up bloodying Rocky with ground ‘n’ pound. Everybody knows you should never bloody Rocky, though, because that makes him more powerful. Rocky pours on the pressure, and Mc. Gregor looks exhausted. Then, out of nowhere, he takes Rocky down and submits him with a rear- naked choke, because Fire Pro Wrestling World has grown sentient and developed a sense of humor about the whole Nate Diaz thing. Result: Mc. Gregor wins by submission after eight minutes and 3. Overall winner: Draw. Technically Mc. Gregor won his fight, but Mayweather vs Rocky was one of the greatest fights of all time, with Mayweather finally pouring his all into a match, battling back against adversity, and sealing his legacy.)Milkshake Duck, for those unaware, is a Twitter meme about a duck who loves milkshakes, but who turns out to be racist. Basically, it’s the fate of every beloved figure who starts out innocent and pure in the public eye. A decent amount of coverage coming from this week’s Mayweather vs Mc. Gregor promo tour has centered on Mc. Gregor’s racially charged remarks and antics in response to those accusations, and Mayweather’s reputation is far from spotless, so you know, if the shoe fits…Mayweather vs Milkshake Duck. Summary: Milkshake Duck, who is a fucking monstrosity with bowling balls for hands and a beak made out of taco shells, straight up murders Floyd Mayweather. He goes to hell for this, where he is immediately elected king. Result: Milkshake Duck wins by submission after nine minutes and 2. Mc. Gregor vs Milkshake Duck. Zelda vs Overwatch. You can’t get Overwatch on the Switch, but if you could, I bet it’d be full of cameos like this. This is by 3. D artist Aaron Walker.
